Pancake Day - Toppings And Ideas

Tired of sprinkling sugar and lemon juice over your pancakes this Shrove Tuesday? It’s definitely time to try something new. Pancake day is usually associated with over indulgence and a little too much sugar, but you can still enjoy the day and keep it healthy. 


We’ve come up with some ways you can get involved with pancake day whilst still maintaining a healthy diet. And who knew it could be so easy? 


Swap your sweet toppings 


It isn’t pancake day without a sweet treat, but that doesn’t mean we have to give ourselves cavities from consuming too much sugar in one meal. There are certain swaps you can make that will reduce the sugar content of your pancakes and you won’t be sacrificing flavour. 


Instead of choosing sugar and jams to spread over your pancakes, top with real fruit such as berries, bananas and peaches. Not only will you be including more nutrients into your meal, but there will be extra fibre that’s essential for healthy digestion. Adding a dollop of natural or greek yoghurt helps to balance out the sweetness of the fruit and is also a way to include more protein.



Another option is to swap your sugary syrups for low calorie and sugar free options. Several health food companies have healthier alternatives that will give you the taste and texture without the added calories. 


Mix up the ingredients 


The beauty when it comes to pancakes is that there’s no one recipe you need to follow. There are hundreds, if not thousands of ways to make them which means you can get creative with your batter mix. We’ve got some ideas for you to make your pancakes healthier ones: 


  • Use mashed bananas instead of flour 
  • Include protein powder 
  • Replace flour with greek yoghurt 
  • Use gluten free alternatives such as rice flour 


What about savoury toppings? 


I know it might sound a bit icky, but savoury pancakes are a thing, and a good one too. We usually associate pancake day with sweet toppings but there are plenty of healthy meals you can make using pancakes. Need some inspiration? 


One of our favourite recipes here at KBK is pancakes topped with cherry tomatoes, mozzarella and basil. Layering the ingredients between the pancakes means you hit a variety of flavours with each mouthful, you could even add a dollop of pesto for an added kick. 



Some other ways to add a savoury twist to your pancakes are by swapping your pancakes for bread and making eggs benedict. Maple syrup and bacon are a thing, so, we know it’s completely acceptable to add bacon to our pancake recipes. Topped with a poached egg and hollandaise sauce, the pancakes will soak up the juices, making them the perfect tool to mop up any leftover egg and sauce on the plate. 


Healthy food doesn’t need to be bland and boring, especially not on pancake day. This Shrove Tuesday, make sure you’re not missing out and take on board some of the points above to whip up healthy pancakes with a twist.
